Simple Ways to Detoxify Your Body and Mind

Many of us are led to believe that a juice fast or cleanse is the only way to truly detoxify our bodies from all the toxins we breathe, eat, drink and even create through the body’s natural processes. This accumulation of toxins can lead to sluggishness, fatigue, nausea and bloating, brain fog, skin issues, dark circles under the eyes and lowered immunity. Luckily, however, the body is incredible at detoxifying on its own and we can just help to support this activity through gentle and simple nutrition and lifestyle strategies.

Here are a few simple ways to show your liver some love

1.    Enjoy fabulous fiber. 

I know how sexy that is but our bodies require at least 25 grams of fiber each day and many experts recommend more like 40 or 50 grams to properly detox. This means adding in more delicious, high-fiber foods like raspberries, avocados, wild rice, lentils, coconut, flaxseeds and nuts.  Your body needs enough fiber to eliminate built up toxins as well as to maintain blood sugar, cholesterol and hormonal balance.

2.    Replace toxic foods with organic whole foods. 

Give your organs a break from processing chemical toxins by ditching the alcohol, coffee, processed junk food and pesticide-laden animal and plant foods. Replace these with organic fruits and veggies, pastured poultry and wild-caught fish and healthy fats like coconut and olive oil, nuts and seeds. 

3. Sweat, hydrate, repeat

Sweating through light exercise for 20- 30 minutes a day encourages fresh oxygen to our cells and helps to remove waste materials from our cells. Massage, saunas and heated yoga can also help release sweat safely and effectively. Ensure to rehydrate with fresh water, nourishing broths, diluted vegetable juices and herbal tea to help flush away toxins.

4. Slurp some herbs

Herbs such as dandelion root, milk thistle and turmeric make delicious tea and support healthy liver tissue. Dandelion root is also a diuretic which allows your liver to speed up the detox process.
