Is There a Best Time to Eat? What Circadian Science Tells Us About Meal Timing
/For years, nutrition advice has focused almost entirely on what we eat. Protein. Fiber. Healthy fats. Plants. All important.
But there's another part of nutrition we're beginning to understand much better: when we eat.
It turns out your body knows the difference between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
So, should you eat breakfast even if you're not hungry? Is intermittent fasting helpful after menopause? Should dinner really be finished by 7? And what if your schedule makes all of that impossible?
The emerging science of chrononutrition—the relationship between food, metabolism, and our internal biological clocks—suggests that meal timing deserves a place in the conversation.
How We End Up Eating Most of Our Food at Night
Modern life, combined with some of the messaging around intermittent fasting, has made it surprisingly easy to under-fuel the first half of the day.
Coffee gets us through the morning. Breakfast is nonexistent or minimal. Lunch gets pushed back because we're busy. We may exercise without adequately fueling before or afterward.
By dinner, we've taken in surprisingly little during the part of the day when we're asking the most of our brains, moods, and bodies.
So we arrive at the end of the day hungry—sometimes ravenous—and end up eating a disproportionate amount of our food in the evening. Dinner gets bigger, something sweet sounds especially good, and we may find ourselves back in the kitchen an hour or two later.
It's easy to look at evening eating and think we need more discipline.
But there's a more useful question:
Did I give my body enough when it needed it earlier in the day?
Sometimes the issue isn't that we're eating too much at night. It's that we've spent the first half of the day asking our bodies to do a lot with very little fuel.
Your Metabolism Keeps Time
Metabolism—our body's process for turning food and drink into energy—isn't static across 24 hours. It follows our circadian biology.
A central clock in the brain's hypothalamus—the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN—responds primarily to light and helps synchronize the body with day and night.
But that's not the only clock we have.
The liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, and gut contain their own peripheral clocks, each following biological rhythms regulated in part by specialized "clock genes."
And here's where nutrition gets particularly interesting:
Food is itself a powerful timing signal for these peripheral clocks.
When the timing of food is consistently out of sync with the body's central clock, it can create a kind of biological mismatch.
Your Body May Handle Food Differently Throughout the Day
One of the clearest examples involves blood sugar.
Insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance generally tend to be better earlier in the day and decline as the day progresses. In practical terms, that means our bodies may respond differently to the same amount of carbohydrate eaten earlier in the day versus late at night.
This adds an important wrinkle to the conversation about intermittent fasting.
Most fasting advice focuses on duration: 16:8, 18:6, and so on.
Circadian research suggests the placement of that eating window may matter along with its length.
Controlled trials of early time-restricted eating—for example, eating between approximately 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.—have found improvements in insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and markers of oxidative stress.
That doesn't mean an 8 a.m.–4 p.m. eating window is practical or appropriate for everyone. But it does suggest that two eating windows of the same length aren't necessarily metabolically interchangeable simply because both involve eight hours of eating.
Meal Timing May Influence More Than Metabolism
The relationship becomes even more interesting when we look specifically at women's health.
A 2025 review of chrononutrition research highlighted research in women in which each 10% increase in the proportion of daily calories consumed after 5 p.m. was associated with approximately a 3% higher level of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation.
This doesn't establish that late eating causes inflammation. But it raises interesting questions about the relationship between meal timing and inflammatory health in women—and whether hormonal changes through perimenopause and menopause might influence that relationship.
There is still much more research to be done specifically in menopausal women.
What About Sleep and Digestion?
Meal timing may also influence something many women care deeply about: sleep.
In a study of 379 midlife women, eating later in the day—and closer to bedtime—was associated with taking longer to fall asleep and poorer sleep quality.
Late meals may also be harder on digestion. Eating close to bedtime has been associated with reflux, and some evidence suggests our tolerance for late-night eating may change with age.
If you've found yourself thinking, I used to be able to eat dinner at 9 p.m. and feel fine—what happened? it may be worth paying attention to that change rather than simply dismissing it.
So, Is There a Best Time to Eat?
Not exactly.
None of this means everyone should stop eating at 4 p.m., force themselves to eat breakfast when they're not hungry, or follow a rigid eating schedule.
Meal timing doesn't suddenly become more important than eating enough, choosing nourishing foods, sleeping well, moving our bodies, or properly fueling and recovering from exercise.
Work schedules, family dinners, medications, chronotype, hunger, health conditions, exercise, and simply enjoying our lives matter too.
But timing deserves a place in the conversation.
Five Ways to Put the Science Into Practice
1. Shift more nourishment earlier when you can.
If you routinely eat very little during the first half of the day and most of your food at night, experiment with shifting some of that nourishment earlier. You don't necessarily need to eat more—start by changing the distribution.
2. Fuel your exercise.
Extending a fasting window shouldn't come at the expense of adequately fueling activity and recovery, particularly as maintaining muscle and bone becomes increasingly important with age.
3. Give dinner and bedtime some breathing room.
If late meals leave you uncomfortable, contribute to reflux, or seem to interfere with sleep, experiment with finishing dinner two to three hours before bed and notice what changes.
4. Aim for consistency rather than perfection.
Our internal clocks respond to regular signals from light, food, movement, and sleep. We thrive on rhythm. Eating at reasonably predictable times may help keep those systems synchronized.
5. Pay attention to your own response.
Chronotype, health status, medications, exercise, sleep, and life circumstances all influence how we respond. Your hunger, digestion, energy, sleep, and exercise performance provide useful information alongside the research.
The Bottom Line
There is no single scientifically established "best" time for everyone to eat, and researchers are still working to understand many of these relationships—particularly in women through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.
But we know enough to take one idea seriously:
When you eat is a physiological signal, not simply a scheduling detail.
Instead of creating another food rule, use that knowledge as an invitation to experiment.
Are you giving your body enough fuel earlier in the day? Are you regularly arriving at dinner ravenous? Does eating late affect your digestion or sleep? Do you feel and perform better when your meals follow a more consistent rhythm?
The goal isn't to eat according to a perfect clock.
It's to find a rhythm that supports your health—and your life.
